Custom Foot Orthotics in Cambridge, ON

The Cambridge Physiotherapy clinic is experienced in doing fittings for custom orthotics, the specially crafted, three-dimensional inserts you place in your shoes to ease pain and improve your gait.
Custom Foot Orthotics are helpful for patients dealing with symptoms from various injuries, including plantar fasciitis, heel spur, flat foot, neuromas, flat feet, high arch, foot and ankle tendon injuries, and those impacted by arthritis or diabetes or by work that involves prolonged walking or standing.
Do I Need Custom Orthotics?
Your Physiotherapist, chiropractor, medical doctor or pedorthist (foot and lower limb specialist) will decide whether orthotics will help you in your daily activities. Orthotics provide improved stability and adjust your feet according to your foot mechanics. They don’t only alleviate foot pain but also help to reduce stress on the ankle, knees, hips, and lower back.
When Do I Need to Wear Orthotics?
Wear your orthotics as often as possible. However, when you first get new orthotics, start at two hours per day and work up to 8 hours in 2 to 3 weeks.
What to Expect at Your First Pedorthist Appointment
Your first visit includes a Lower Extremity Biomechanical Assessment and Gait Analysis - a detailed look at how you stand and walk.
During this appointment, your pedorthist will:
- Discuss your symptoms and medical history
- Examine your feet and walking pattern
- Recommend personalized solutions such as custom orthotics, footwear changes, or compression garments
If custom orthotics are recommended, a cast of your feet will be taken. It usually takes about two weeks to create your custom devices.
Your second visit is the fitting appointment, where you'll try your new orthotics, ensure they fit comfortably, and learn how to adjust to them. Follow-ups are only needed if adjustments are required - part of our ongoing care and service.
What Is a Pedorthist?
A pedorthist is a foot and lower limb specialist who focuses on how your body moves - especially how your feet, ankles, knees, and hips work together.
Pedorthists aren't medical doctors; instead, they use their expertise in biomechanics to assess how your feet function and create custom-made orthotics or footwear adjustments to improve comfort, balance, and movement.

Is Custom Foot Orthotics Covered by Insurance?

We'll provide the biomechanical assessment report and receipt for your records.
If you're unsure about your coverage, check with your insurance provider before your appointment - or call us and we'll be happy to help you find out what's covered.
FAQs about Custom Orthotics
What is Custom Foot Orthotics?
Custom orthotics are specialized shoe inserts that support and align your feet to improve your body’s overall biomechanics. Unlike over-the-counter insoles, they are tailored to your unique foot structure and needs. Custom foot orthotics are uniquely custom-made to alleviate pain when inserted into your shoes. Orthotics also help with back, hip, and knee pain.
Most insurance companies reimburse for custom foot orthotics when medically necessary and prescribed.
What conditions do custom orthotics treat?
Custom orthotics help plantar fasciitis, bunions, flat feet, high arches, Achilles tendinitis, and diabetic foot pain. They also reduce knee, hip, and lower back pain.
How are custom orthotics made?
Custom orthotics begin with a physical exam, gait analysis, and foam foot casting. The orthotic is precisely moulded to fit your foot and correct your unique issues.
How long do custom orthotics last?
Depending on usage and material quality, custom orthotics last from 1 to 2 years. We recommend regular check-ups to make sure they still fit you correctly, as wear and tear and changes in your foot structure might require an adjustment or replacement after a year or two.
Are custom orthotics covered by my insurance?
Most insurance plans reimburse you for custom orthotics. You will probably need to pay upfront and submit your claim. Coverage varies, so we’ll check with your insurance provider for you before you get your orthotics.
